Wood County Commissioner Alvie Perkins
|
Alvin “Alvie” Perkins
today announced his candidacy for re-election as Wood County
Commissioner. Perkins was first elected as one of the commissioners
in 1982, and most recently re-elected Commissioner in 2004.
Prior to becoming commissioner, Perkins was twice elected Mayor of Bowling
Green and also served two terms on Bowling Green City Council.
During his seven years as mayor of Bowling Green, he was twice elected
president of the Wood County Mayors Association, a group that he and
Jim Carter helped charter. He also served on the National Resources Committee
of the National Association of Cities.
Perkins is a member of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments
and serves on the Portage River Basin Council.

“
In the past four years, we have worked very hard to attract quality
businesses to Wood County. Keeping Owens-Illinois in Northwest Ohio
through their move to Perrysburg, as well as attracting Bass Pro
will mean continued economic opportunities for Wood County citizens.
We hope in the next few years that we can keep expanding business
opportunities throughout the entire county, while keeping existing
businesses here. The work of the Wood County Economic Development
Commission, which we established, has been phenomenal.” said
Perkins.
“ We have always worked hard to protect the citizens’ tax dollars
and are very proud of our Aa3 Moody’s Bond Rating, one of the few counties
in the state with such an excellent rating. We also live within our means and
work hard to provide the best possible services within our budget,” Perkins
continued.
“ We can all be proud of Wood County’s leadership in the area of
alternative green energy. The four wind turbines outside Bowling Green are both
just a step in the right direction that we will continue to pursue. Wood county,
with First Solar in Perrysburg Township, along with leadership of Bowling Green
State University and others, is proud to be a leader in this essential area.
“ I have always kept my promise to be a full-time commissioner open and
available to all Wood Countians. We have kept bickering out of county business,
while attempting to preserve some checks-and-balances in and around the courthouse.”
Perkins is a Perrysburg native who graduated from Perrysburg High School
in 1951. He was drafted during the Korean War and served 14 months overseas
in Germany. Perkins has been a member of American Legion Post 45, V.F.W.
Post 1148, Am Vets Post 711, and also the 40&8. He received the Chamber
of Commerce Outstanding Citizens Award in 2000. The Perkins family belongs
to the First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green. He is a member of
the Farm Bureau, Farmer’s Union (Life Member), Bowling Green Elk’s
Club, member of the Plumbers & Pipefitter’s Local Union 50 for
54 years.
Perkins and his wife, Gail, reside at 602 E. Gypsy Lane Road. They have
two grown children — a son, Tom and daughter, Robbie. |
